If you or someone you love is suffering from a gambling addiction (you can check the signs here) you may be wondering what kind of treatment options are available. Fortunately for you, we’re here to help!
There are two primary types of treatment and therapy and we’ll discuss them both:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses the importance of thought and how it impacts what we do and also how we feel. The general idea behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that thoughts and behavior are connected and for us to deal with a psychological problem we have to deal with both the thoughts that lead us to it and the behaviors that both cause and are impacted by those thoughts.
The primary focus here is that our perception of an event shapes the way we behave and the way we think about that event.
Fortunately, CBT is a briefer form of therapy and also time-limited. The average number of sessions a client receives are 16 (compare this to psychoanalysis which can take years or even decades).
Self Help Support Groups
Just like there is an Alcoholics Anonymous, a Sex Addicts Anonymous there is also a Gamblers Anonymous. This is a step program similar to the type used for substance abuse or alcohol dependency. This provides a structured and committed path for users to follow on their road to recovery.
Promising Studies For Future Medical Treaments
There is also a fair amount of promising studies that are showing positive early results using anti-depressants and Naltrexone. These have already proved to be an effective One-Two punch for opiod and alcohol dependencies and if tests continue to provide positive results, It may not be long before this is an option for you as well.
While there may only be a few different kinds of treatment options available today, you shouldn’t fret. These are well tested and EFFECTIVE means of controlling your addictions.
