Should You Go To Rehab?
Feb 2014

Whether it’s been brought to your attention by a loved one or you have realized it for yourself, you may be struggling with an addiction of some kind which would be better suited to be handled by a rehab program. Although you may have heard of people talking about rehab programs in a negative light or you may feel unsure about them personally, a rehab program can be the deciding factor in determining whether or not you’re going to let your addiction rule your life. More often than not, people who are addicted question if they truly need a rehab program because they feel as if they are in control of their lives, even though the substances they abuse provide an escape from their reality.

It’s very common for addicts to be in denial about their addiction. It’s difficult for some people to be able to admit that they have a problem. They may view drug or alcohol use as normal. They may feel as if it’s just something that they do to relax or to help them feel more happy about activities that they are participating in. For other people, it may be an escape from various types of emotions and forms of stress that they experience on a daily basis. Because it may be viewed as an escape, the individual may feel as if they are not doing anything wrong and that they are not harming themselves by their continued use of the substances.

To another extent, there are people who do realize that they have a problem. They may be able to feel themselves losing control of their lives. Time that would be spent with family and friends might start being spent alone somewhere using drugs or alcohol. They may start missing out on important events or skipping work. They may feel as if anything they do when they’re not abusing substances is not worth their time or may not be on the same level of quality in terms of the experience. The individual may become so addicted to the substances that they spend all of their money in order to gain access to the substances or start borrowing or stealing money in order to keep up with their addiction.

Although you may not feel as if you have a problem, you might want to consider this from another perspective. Have your family members and loved ones told you that they are worried about you? Have they mentioned that they are concerned about your use of drugs and alcohol? If so, then you may want to think more seriously about their opinions. Even though your friends who also use drugs and alcohol may be supportive of you and say that your other friends and family are wrong, it doesn’t always mean that it’s true. Generally speaking, your loved ones will always want the best for you. If there are a number of people in your life who believe that you may have an addiction, you may want to consider exploring the options that a rehab program can provide.
