Differences Between Therapy and Rehab
Nov 2013

One of the common questions that people tend to wonder about is whether or not therapy and rehab are the same thing. In reality, they are actually two very different elements, although they work together for someone who is seeking to break away from their addiction. Since the terms that are used with rehab and therapy can be a little confusing for those who are new to the process, the following information serves as a brief overview about the differences between these two very important aspects on your pathway towards recovery.

Rehab is a program that is used to help people recover from their addictions that they have developed. There are different types of rehab programs that are created for different kinds of addictions. All of them are used to help people work towards gaining a sober lifestyle again. The hope is that the people won’t return to their addictive behavior, though there are a lot of addicts that do and eventually need to go back to another rehab program. Rehab is a combination of different methods, treatments, and phases that can be used to help people work towards self-acceptance and a sober lifestyle.

Therapy is a form of treatment and method that is used to help people work towards becoming less addicted during a rehab program. Technically, therapy exists on its own in many different forms and it’s not exclusive to being used for rehab or helping addicts. However, on a rehab level, therapy has many different forms. Some clinics use expressive therapy such as art and other creative options to help people express themselves during the rehab process. The most common type of therapy during rehab is group therapy. This is a form of therapy that gets all of the rehab clients together and has them talk about their feelings with each other and a counselor to help them share their experiences and reasons for substance abuse. The goal is to provide everyone with the feeling of being understood and make it easier for them to learn from each other in a non-judgmental setting.

Rehab and therapy work together to provide addicted individuals with an outlet that will help them to work towards a more sober lifestyle. When someone is in a rehab program, they will commonly be enrolled in therapy. If they feel that they are not getting enough from their therapy sessions in the rehab program, they are encouraged to get involved with more therapy sessions at the clinic or within the area. The counselor may also recommend that the individual should attend support groups because this is another form of therapy. However, not all rehab programs are created the same; some focus on therapeutic approaches and some don’t even use them. As a result, it’s a good idea to do research on certain programs before getting involved in order to ensure that the desired treatment method and approach are being used to help the addicted individual.
