Prescription Drug Rehab Programs
Sep 2013

Believe it or not, abusing or suffering from addiction to prescription drugs is extremely common. People tend to think over-using prescription drugs isn’t as dangerous as cocaine or heroin, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, prescription drug addiction is such a problem in the United States, it is being called an epidemic. Part of the reason is the misconception that they aren’t dangerous when being abused. Luckily, drug treatment facilities understand this and are offering unique rehab programs specifically designed for abuse or addiction of prescription medications.

Types of Programs

There are a few different types of programs available for prescription drug treatment, most of which are very similar or the same to recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. In most cases, recovering from prescription drugs means you are in the same support groups as those recovering from any other drug. The withdrawal period is often the same as well, therefore the first program available is detox. Other common types of programs include inpatient or residential treatment, outpatient treatment, hospitalization (for the most severe cases), holistic treatment, and community support groups.

The first treatment program is detox. Detox, short for detoxification, is a method used by many facilities to help you recover from the withdrawal period. Often times, withdrawal symptoms are so severe they cause physical pain, emotional trauma or life threatening conditions. Seizures, nausea, vomiting, severe migraines, stroke, heart attack, and heart palpitations are not uncommon among people suffering from addiction to prescription drugs. Ironically enough, they will use medication therapy to help you reduce these side effects. For prescription drug users, the medications are non-addictive and non-stimulating, only acting as a reduction of your symptoms.

Inpatient Treatment

Another type of treatment is called inpatient treatment, or residential treatment. You will live in the rehab facility for around 30 days, and pay weekly. You are going to be monitored 24/7, attend therapy with the drug counselors, go to support groups, and participate in activities with other residents.

Outpatient Treatment

Some people prefer outpatient treatment for their addiction to prescription drugs, so that they don’t miss work or school, and continue living at home. These individuals will need to check in with the rehab center once a day and attend mandatory support groups. It is definitely more difficult getting clean through outpatient treatment, but for some, it is a viable option.

Community Support Group

Another way to go about it is by attending community-based support groups. These include groups similar to Narcotics Anonymous (NA) but for prescription drug users specifically. By attending support groups, you get nonjudgmental support from others also dealing with the same afflictions. These are often used in conjunction with after-care programs or outpatient treatment programs.

If you are suffering from addiction to prescription drugs, don’t hesitate to find a rehab facility near you and start one of these programs.
