An addiction to sex is not as common as other types of addictions, such as those to drugs or alcohol. Similarly, a sex addiction can be both dangerous and harmful in that it can negatively affect the person who is suffering from the addiction as well as those involved in the sexual acts. In what way can an addiction to sex be harmful? In most cases, sexually-transmitted infections and diseases are the biggest causes of concern when it comes to individuals who are addicted to sex.
An addiction to sex can be considered a mental condition, as it involves the sufferer becoming excessively preoccupied with thoughts or behaviors that relate to obtaining sexual pleasure as a form of stress relief. Thus, someone with a sex addiction will spend large amounts of time thinking or engaging in sexual activities. Moreover, a person with a sexual addiction will likely have numerous one-night stands, spend more time masturbating, and focusing on various ways to obtain sexual pleasure. In fact, between 17 and 37 million people worldwide, which is about three percent of the global population, have been or will be victims of an addiction to sex.
There is also a form of disorder that relates to sex, which is known as a paraphilia; this disorder involves being sexually aroused by objects and/or actions that can be considered unacceptable by society’s standards or completely illegal. Some examples of a paraphilia can be fetishism, voyeurism, exhibitionism, pedophilia, and sadomasochism (S&M). In terms of their definitions, each paraphilia is characterized by the particular cause of sexual arousal. Firstly, fetishism is a sexual disorder that involves being sexual aroused by certain objects, materials, and body parts. In contrast, voyeurism is a paraphilia that involves being sexual aroused by simply watching others engage in sexual activities, instead of participating in the acts themselves. Moreover, exhibitionism is a paraphilia that involves the sufferer becoming aroused because he or she is being watched by others when engaging in any type of sexual behavior.
As mentioned above S&M is short for sadomasochism, and this type of paraphilia involves being sexual aroused by being the cause or recipient of pain and humiliation. Thus, individuals who inflict pain upon others during sexual activities are considered sadists, while the individuals who are receiving this form of treatment are known as masochists. However, the most concerning type of paraphilia that exists is pedophilia, which is a mental disorder which causes the sufferer to become sexually aroused by the idea of children engaging in sexual activities. In most parts of the world, following through with these ideas is considered illegal and punishable by criminal law.
Essentially, when a person has developed a paraphilia, he or she is considered a sex addict. In terms of the causes, there are several reasons that individuals can develop these types of mental conditions. For instance, some experts believe that the causes can be related to biological, social, and psychological factors. In particular, it is believed that sexual addictions can be caused by changes in some area of the brain and chemical imbalances. In terms of psychological factors, some studies have shown that depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders can eventually lead to addictions to sex, drugs, or alcohol. Typically, the sufferers will develop these addictions as a means of dealing with their pain and stress.
As can be seen, a sex addiction can be harmful and dangerous to the sufferer and those in his or her life. This is because individuals with sex addictions will likely engage in sexual activities, and they will do so without protection in most cases. Thus, these individuals are constantly taking risks of developing sexually-transmitted infections and diseases.
There are many different approaches to treating addictions to sex. For instance, some individuals will try to deal with their issues on their own, while others will choose to register with rehabilitation centers. In most cases, rehabilitation is necessary in order to overcome the addiction and move forward from it. Most rehabilitation centers will offer in-house programs, addiction counseling, and care from medical professionals. As the addiction is typically caused by related mental conditions, such as depression and anxiety disorders, the approach to treatment must be all-encompassing. Thus, these individuals will likely need to undergo medical treatment and behavioral therapy.
Most importantly, sex addictions can be dangerous for the sufferers and those affected by their condition. In most cases, rehabilitation is the only effective way to ensure that the sufferer overcomes his or her addiction to sex.
